Understanding BMI

Understanding BMI: What It Is & Why It Matters

What is BMI? 🤔

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a simple calculation used to assess whether a person is within a healthy weight range based on their height and weight. It’s widely used by healthcare professionals as a quick screening tool to identify potential weight-related health risks.

While BMI is not a perfect measure, it provides a general guide to body composition and can help individuals understand where they stand in terms of their weight category.

How is BMI Calculated?

The formula for BMI is:

📊 BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m²)

For example, if someone weighs 80kg and is 1.75m tall, their BMI would be:

➡️ 80 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 26.1

This number is then compared to BMI categories to determine whether a person falls within a healthy weight range.

Is BMI Always Accurate? 🏋️‍♂️

While BMI is a useful tool, it has limitations. It does not account for:

Muscle Mass → A person with high muscle mass (like an athlete) may have a high BMI but low body fat.
Bone Density → People with denser bones may have a higher BMI.
Fat Distribution → BMI doesn’t differentiate between visceral fat (around organs) and subcutaneous fat (under the skin).
Age & Gender Differences → BMI may not always be accurate for older adults, children, or different ethnic groups.

For a more accurate assessment of your health, a body composition scan (such as an InBody scan) can provide detailed information about fat percentage, muscle mass, and overall body composition.

Why is BMI Important?

Understanding your BMI range can help you identify potential health risks. A high BMI is associated with conditions such as:

⚠️ Heart disease
⚠️ Type 2 diabetes
⚠️ High blood pressure
⚠️ Joint issues
⚠️ Certain types of cancer

If your BMI is outside the healthy range, making lifestyle changes—such as improving your diet, increasing physical activity, and seeking professional advice—can help improve overall health.
